Lesson 1: Before Basic |
1.
Be sure
that you have your spouse’s Social Security Number written down if you have
not already memorized it! This will come
in great handy for when you are trying to get your ID, paying bills, etc. Be sure that if it is written down, it is
stored in a secure place.
2.
Write
down any bills, their amounts and their due dates prior to the departure
date. It may also be helpful to ask them
how these need to be paid (i.e. online or in person). Setting up automatic payments may be
something you want to look into. Most
banks will allow you to set up a “smart pay” feature linking your checking account
with your bills online. You can enter in
a dollar amount and the date when it needs to be deducted and the bank will
automatically make these payments for you – one less thing to worry about!
3.
Provide
your departing spouse with the SSN, DOB, address, POB, and full name of anyone
you even CONSIDERING coming to the BMT graduation! I cannot express how much time this will save
you! Once your AB has submitted their
list of guests, there really is no going back.
You should have your military I.D. by the time graduation rolls around,
in which case you will be able to sponsor people on base, but it is better to
be safe than sorry!
4. Write
down the recruiter’s contact information.
There may be a need to contact him/her for information in the
future. Most times, they are willing to
answer your questions.
5. Look into getting a Power of Attorney. This is a legal document allowing you to legally be able to sign your husband's name on documents. This will come in great handy, not only for the BMT period of time, but also for future deployments and periods of time apart!
6. Most importantly: CHERISH YOUR TIME TOGETHER AND BE SURE TO LET HIM KNOW HOW PROUD OF HIM
YOU ARE! Do not guilt trip them, become
distant, or become emotionally detached – they really need you right now! Odds are a contributing factor to this
decision was YOUR well-being!
7.
Lastly, do not expect any contact to be made. Go into the BMT journey expecting little so that
should contact be made, it will mean so much more.
You also won’t let yourself down if their flight is unable to make
outside contact.
